Happy 2 Year Accident-versary to ME!
Note: I wrote this post on the exact day of my accident but since I was traveling and didn’t have my photos handy, I thought I’d wait until I had all my ducks in a row before I posted it. So here we are… QUACK QUACK :P
Today marks two years since my accident. It feels surreal that two years ago, to this exact day, I broke my back and learned how to walk again. Oh how time flies, am I right? :)
I’ve thought a lot about what to post for this special day. I consider today to be a special day because it was a rebirth of sorts. A day that I feel fortunate I was able to overcome and persevere through.
For those of you who still have NO idea what I’m talking about, you can see my first post after my accident when I took my first steps again, another one detailing the emotional rollercoaster my rehabilitation process entailed, etc.
I thought today would be a wonderful time to relive a fun memory from when I lived in a nursing home. I know that sounds a bit weird but I was stuck there doing physical therapy so what was a girl like me to do? Well…BAKE! That’s what! :P
My awesome occupational therapist, Minnett, took pity on me and my withdrawals from baking, so one day, as part of my therapy for learning how to function in a world in a wheelchair (at the time), she went out and got a few brownie/cookie mixes from the 99 cents store!!
I was completely flabberghasted and beyond excited. I learned how to stabilize myself when I had to stand up out of my wheelchair to wash the pans, prep the batter, etc. Check out my spiffy set of wheels! ;)
She did have to assist me with opening/closing the oven door and putting the pans in just to make sure I didn’t hurt myself but to see I could do most things on my own without any help really boosted my morale. Shown below is the brownie batter, which I of course had to tweak with coffee to make it even MORE delicious… :P
As much as I liked most of the workers at the nursing home and also having some of the regular tenants stop by and ask if I was coming to karaoke in the common room with them :P, being in a nursing home really took a toll on me emotionally. It was hard for me to remain cheerful and bubbly which is my normal disposition, when I saw so many people in pain just from old age or various ailments and there was nothing I could do about it.
Being able to bake REALLY brightened my day and once everything was reasonably cool, I set off to distribute my goodies throughout the nursing home :) Here are some unedited pictures of the finished products!!
Mmm, that fudge-y center is calling out my name! And you can’t forget about the cookies of course, because cookies are still (delicious) cookies, no matter what shape or size :D
The wheelchair actually aided me then versus a walker because I was able to put the pan of chocolate chip cookies and brownies on my lab and roll around to pass them out to people.
It was a lot of fun and I even had some people stop by my room after to grab seconds!
I’ve realized that a lot of my joy comes from spreading happiness (usually in the form of baked goods) to others. It’s what makes me feel whole and complete. I know that many of you who read this blog have tasted my desserts so you know how much love and decadence I put into them. And if you haven’t yet, I really hope to meet you someday to give you some delicious goodies to brighten your day! :D
So here’s a happy 2 year accident-versary to me and a very, very happy Monday to you :) Please post in the comments below some of your favorite desserts/foods that I bestowed upon you ;) And if you haven’t had any yet, what sounds good to you? You never know what might end up finding its way to you!
Until next time, y’all!! ;P
Great post, I can’t believe it has been 2 years.
Best thing I have tried are the cake push pops you made for my bday… But everything you have made is so good. I remember we once made eggs & chorizo at my apartment, that was really good too!

Thanks Julio! Me too!!! It still feels so weird when people ask me how long ago my accident was, it takes me a while to figure it out :P
Aww thanks! I don’t even remember what flavor I made for you… I THINK it was a Three Musketeers variety with chopped up bits of the candy in between layers of Devil’s food cake and Chocolate Marshmallow frosting :)
Thank you! Ooooh yum, I remember that! Now I’m totally craving chorizo y huevos…

Thanks Ira, me too! Still working out a few little kinks here and there but that’s to be expected apparently post (super-intense) accident.
Haha of course! That’s a crowd favorite! :D I remember how everyone demolished them at Sharon’s bday lunch! :P

Why thank you, BroJo!! Ooh yum, I used to LOVE making desserts with peanut butter!! Sadly, about 5 years ago I became allergic – BOO!!! But I’m currently working on ridding myself of those allergies so fingers crossed that I can someday make PB cookies for you! :) And thank you!!

Great post, Vyvybutt! I can’t pick a favorite, all the things you’ve made me were so good! Oreo truffles are of course atop the deliciousness pyramid, along with your ice cream, Oreo pie and pizza pie, and the flourless cake with coffee whipped cream :D Not to mention all the delish savory dishes :D

Vyvy! Your perseverance during your recovery is so inspirational! I can’t even imagine how hard that must have been to deal with. I’m glad that you are able to see it as such a positive now :) I currently have a hip injury which will likely require surgery (whether the surgery will help or not is debatable) and my physical therapist says that full recovery afterwards will take about a year. While my recovery won’t be as serious or scary as yours, I am inspired by you to perhaps start a blog during my recovery as you have for yours. I’m sure the mental struggle will be more difficult than the physical aspects of dealing with an injury, as it already is during my pre-surgery phase. I hope your back has fully healed and that you are able to return to your pre-accident activities :) Now that I think of it, I think seeing your posts about zumba on facebook were what made me first want to try it back in 2012 or so. I LOVE zumba and hope to get back to it as soon as I can!

Susie!! Wow, thank you so much for your kind words! :) I’m sorry about your hip injury and potential surgery, that’s stressful! Oh boy, a year… Well if you ever need to talk before or after your surgery, even just to get out some of your fears and frustration, let me know!
Any type of recovery will be stressful and be a bit of a pain but I think starting a blog would be a great idea! Yes, the mental struggle is the worst because you wish you could still do the same things but you can’t, doctor’s orders ;)
Thank you! I’m starting to get back into things but sometimes I have setbacks because physically I’m okay but I’m still working on a couple of underlying kinks unfortunately.
Awesome!!! I’m so glad you tried out Zumba, I loooooooove it! :D
I really hope your hip gets better soon with or without surgery :) Thanks so much again for reading my blog! I love connecting with others over these kinds of things :P

Wow, how time does march on! Like others have said, I cannot believe it has been two years already. I hope that you have a wondrous 2015, full of great desserts and whatever else it is you would like.
As for dessert: if you ever head my way, I promise that I will bake YOU something. ‘Cause that is kind of my thing, too (well, books first…then baking, I suppose).

Yes, indeed. It’s only 90 minutes away, and I go home pretty frequently for fairly long bursts of time…but I am super excited to move back, and be close to my mom and “baby” brother. :)
